Black soap

Black soap, or Alata Samina as it is called in Ghana, is a traditional African soap for face, body and hair. Made from natural ingredients such as plant ash, shea butter and oils, it provides a cleansing and gently exfoliating feel.

From Ghana to your skin

Black soap has its roots among Yoruba women in present-day Nigeria and spread through trade and cultural exchange to Ghana, where the craft has been passed down for generations. Unlike many modern cleansing products, traditional black soap is made from natural ingredients such as plant ash, cocoa, shea butter and oils. The result is a simple cleanser with deep roots in craft and tradition. Our black soap is handmade using traditional methods by women’s cooperatives in Ghana. By preserving the original production processes, the soap remains in its most authentic form, without unnecessary additives, perfume or fillers.

What is black soap good for?

Black soap is valued for its cleansing and gently exfoliating feel. It is often used by people with oily, combination or blemish-prone skin, but also by anyone who wants to give dry skin a more thorough cleanse from time to time. Many also use it on the scalp when it needs to feel fresher, cleaner and more balanced. That is why many choose black soap when their skin or scalp feels:

  • Oily or shiny
  • Combination
  • Prone to blemishes
  • Congested or heavy
  • Dry but in need of a more thorough cleanse
  • In need of a fresher-feeling scalp

How do you use black soap?

Black soap can be used on the face, body and scalp when you want a simple but thorough cleanse. It also works well as a makeup remover and as a shampoo alternative.

As a face wash

Work up a lather with water in your hands and gently massage it into damp skin. Rinse thoroughly.

As a body soap

Use it in the shower when your skin needs to feel clean and fresh.

As a makeup remover

Work up a lather and use it gently to cleanse the skin in the evening.

As a shampoo alternative

Take a small piece of soap and gently rub it against wet hair or directly between your hands. Work the lather into the scalp, massage it in and rinse thoroughly. You can also gently rub the soap over the crown of wet hair and then shampoo with the lather that forms.

Start gently if you have sensitive skin, as black soap cleanses thoroughly.
